About NGEFS

Naserian Girls Empowerment Foundation

Veronica Founder;

Naserian Girls Empowerment Foundation (NGEF) was founded based on my own testimony of real life experience. I grew up in this beautiful Maasai Community in the Southern part of Kenya, unfortunately in my time, girls were being married off against their wish, denied education; women denied their rights to defend their daughters, thus silencing their voices in the midst of laws whereby the men were the only decision makers.

Early pregnancy was a taboo/criminal offence for girls in my community. Men who were responsible of the pregnancies were freed to walk away, while the girls were married off to elderly or polygamous men as punishment. I witnessed two of my childhood best friends who were brutally forced to early marriages with polygamous men of more than three wives. Due to their early age in marriage, one of my friend succumbed to a chronic fistula condition, that led to her untimely death.

I further witnessed women being ruthlessly beaten, abused, chased away from their matrimonial homes, and even when they ran away to their parents’ home for security, they were forcefully returned back in the name that the issue will be sorted by the “Wazees”,(Swahili word referring to the elders). My own sister and cousin were even hospitalized due to injuries sustained from their abusive spouses, causing my cousin to get a miscarriage; a situation that really depressed me in pain and sorrow, but there was no action that I was able to take. All these and many more that I witnessed in my village, kept me with an urge of doing something to stop the ruthless abuses that the women and girls were facing.

I thank God that I got an opportunity not only to study, but to pursue journalism; an area that has helped me to write and share stories of the challenges faced by women and girls globally. This experience brought the birth of Naserian Girl Empowerment Foundation(NGEF); registered under the ministry of education, youth, sports, culture and social services in 2016. I will endeavor to be a voice of the voiceless, with a dream of seeing girls and women enjoy their full rights, and all forms of Gender Based Abused get totally ERADICATED.
